TU/NOAA Nat'l Marine Fisheries see Coho
TU, NOAA, Bohan and Canelis, the California Department of Fish and Game,
University of California and the Sonoma County Water Agency, working
together, installed a rotary screw fish trap last Friday on lower
Austin Creek. The first fish to emerge after our first
night fishing was a coho smolt. An auspicious beginning and a great

2 years of TU action will culminate in
return of steelhead to 13 miles of Santa Ana Mountains habitat
Stepping up efforts to help endangered steelhead trout make a comeback
in Southern California, a state wildlife agency on Thursday agreed
to pay for a $l.2-million fish ladder in Orange County that will enable
the trout to swim upstream and spawn.
The ladder will help fish migrating from the ocean to swim through
a concrete culvert under Interstate 5 on Trabuco Creek in San Juan
Capistrano. Currently, fish swimming upstream can go only as far
as a large pool at the bottom of the culvert. Get

Bush administration's recently-announced habitat
rule will remove longstanding protections for the rivers and streams
where salmon live and, harm the people and communities that care about

Pursuant
to last October's petition by
TU and the National Audubon Society's Peregrine Chapter asking for
a process to be undertaken to assure that adequate water is left
in streams for steelhead and coho salmon, the State Water Resources
Control Board held a workshop on 11:00 am, Thursday,
March 17 in Sacramento.

Just when the scales may have a chance to tip in the
favor of the magnificent salmonids, the Bush administration is
proposing to dramatically reduce critical habitat protections
from Southern California to the Canadian border, by an estimated
80 to 90 percent. Hearings on the proposed new Critical Habitat regulations
will be held from 6:30
p.m. - 9 p.m., Thursday, January 13 in
Arcata; on Wednesday, January 19 in Rohnert Park,
on Thursday January 20 in Sacramento, and Tuesday
