Fish Trap Monitoring (Sonoma County)
Volunteers are needed to assist CDFG and NOAA Fisheries in monitoring
fish traps at Green Valley and Austin Creeks. The task involves
working with agency personnel to identify, count and release trapped
fish each day, maintaining a log and reporting data collected to
CDFG and NOAA Fisheries. The information will be used to assess
the results of the brood stock populations and the general health
of the fisheries in these watersheds. Monitors will
also assist DFG staff recording redd counts in spawning beds in
the streams being studied.

South Coast Chapter Conservation Auction
Co-host: Fly Fishing Club of Orange County
Phoenix Club
Santa Ana
Dinner & Auction at 6PM
Program at 7:30PM
Dr.Robert Behnke, author of "Trout and Salmon of North America"
All proceeds go directly to supporting our stream restoration
and community outreach programs in Orange County. For 2004
we will be continuing our work on San Mateo Creek, where a 13" Native
Rainbow Trout was discovered in November of 2003, a holdover
fish from our 40+ fish counts of 1998. Project work this year
will include, barrier surveys, non-native plant and animal removal,
water quality testing and monitoring, educational signage,
and habitat suitability studies. Our new projects will be
on San Juan Creek and Trabuco Creeks with similar work to San Mateo
Creek affording plenty of opportunities for volunteers.
Many of you have hobbies, (fishing, art, photography, crafts,
gardening, floral arranging, camping, travel, etc), that we are
unaware of. Each of you work in a profession, own businesses,
or volunteer your time for worthy organizations that may be supportive
of the type of work Trout Unlimited does.
I am asking each of you, personally or through your business or
employer, if you can, to donate an item, or service, for the auction.
My goal is to generate approximately 30 items or services,
with a total auction value of $3000-$5000. The Fly Club
Committee is generating a similar list. Values can
range from $25 on up. Some suggestions are: auto service, yard
maintenance, travel miles, lodging, guided trips, sailing, artwork,
photos, crafts, jewelry,camping/ fishing/ hunting gear, furniture,
meals or discounts, concerts, amusements, entertainment, game tickets,
wine, etc. These items are to be "lifestyle items" not
necessarily fishing related and they do not need to be new, but
hopefully in good condition. So think it over and if you can pitch
in, the Steelhead Trout of Southern California will love you
for saving or maintaining their homes and neighborhoods.
Items can be mailed to my home at the below address or call
or e-mail me with a description and value of your item. I
will write up a certificate for the auction and see that you receive
recognition and a receipt for tax purposes.
If any of you are interested in attending this event and hearing
Dr. Behnke's program, please let me know and I will add your
name to the reservation list and send you more details. Remember: "We
All Live Down Stream"!
Thanks,

Fall Hatch 2003
Thursday
Cocktails at 6:30 Dinner at 7:30
Golden Gate Club, 135 Fisher Loop
The Presidio of San Francisco
The North Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited is pleased to invite you to Fall Hatch 2003 - to be held at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. We are planning dinner and live jazz, raffles, a silent auction and live auction. In addition, we will be presenting the Second Annual Leo Cronin Award for Dedicated Conservation Efforts in Northern California. Finally, members of Trout Unlimited's Executive Staff and Board of Directors will be attending Fall Hatch. You will have an opportunity to hear from Charles Gauvin, TU's President, about the future of TU and National's commitment to conservation in California.
Planning for Fall Hatch is reaching a fevered-pitch and we need some additional firepower. We are out scouring the community to generate items for the auctions, raffle and prizes. We're looking for donations of food, beer and wine. We're working on promotion, PR and logistics. In short, we need your help. Please contact me if you would be willing to lend a hand. We're excited about Fall Hatch - once again it is going to be a tremendous event. So please, contact your friends, neighbors and fellow TU'ers and come to the Golden Gate Club on November 13th - the event's success is dependent upon your presence.
We look forward to seeing you!

Volunteer Weekend at Devil's Gulch
All day Saturday - Sunday
There will be a two-day stream restoration and work project taking place on
the Devil's Gulch tributary of Lagunitas Creek (just west of the town of
Lagunitas - take Sir Francis
Drake west out of Fairfax). Come enjoy this beautiful spot in Marin and get
involved with the North Bay Chapter's on-going efforts to protect the stream's salmon
and steelhead!
We really need your help! Come for an hour or two, or stay the weekend; the
volunteer campsites are FREE for Friday and Saturday at the Devil's Gulch
Campground. Also enjoy FREE breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday,
breakfast and lunch on Sunday, and keg beers (graciously provided by
Lagunitas Brewing Company).
This year's project entails the replacement of three footbridges over small
tributaries along the trail that parallels Devil's Gulch located in Samuel
P. Taylor State Park. The new bridges will replace existing structures that
are in disrepair and too close to the banks of Devil's Gulch, creating a
hazard to both humans and the threatened species of coho and steelhead.
Anyone interested is encouraged to attend! Volunteers should bring
long-sleeved shirts, pants, and gloves (poison oak is present in the area),
and individual camping gear (tents not provided). Let us know if you plan to
be there. Call Mike Cronin or Linda Perone (415.924-4248) for directions
and details.
VOLUNTEERS: When you arrive at the Main gate at Samuel P. Taylor Park, let
them know you are with the Trout Unlimited Devil's Gulch Crew and they will
direct you where to go (TU signs will also be posted).
